Movies Review

What do you get when you take a Japanese manga franchise that contains over 28 volumes and over 100 anime and try to turn it into the next big IP franchise? It seems like a plot that is too full of headache attempts that ultimately falls flat. Knights of the Zodiac, the live-action adaptation of the Saint Seiya series by Masami Kurumada, knows how to have fun at times, but in the end it tries to strike a balance between irreverence and self.
Knights of the Zodiac has the potential to be fun, but it fails by taking itself too seriously and looking bad the whole time.

Seiya (Mackenyu), an orphan who made his own way of life on the streets, lives a seemingly straight life. He often thinks about the sister who was taken from him when she was young and how he will find her again. Seiya is also an expert fighter, competing in street fighting rings at night. His simple life changes after the war when his hidden powers come to light, and he is taken in by the mysterious Alman Kido (Bean). Kido reveals that Seiya is destined to become part of the titular Knights of the Zodiac, a professional group sworn to protect Sienna (Iseman), the reincarnation of the goddess Athena. Kido's ex-wife, Guraad (Janssen), is on Seiya's trail, determined to hunt down Sienna. To meet his destiny, Seiya must face his past, control his powers, and lose the chip on his shoulder.

Knights of the Zodiac begins with a scenario that any middle schooler just learning about the pantheon of Greek gods and loves fantasy will eat right away. It has a chance to be fun, and sometimes it does (for one, the way the movie worked in the transition of girl / girl was silly but great to see on a large scale). Mostly, however, Knights gets lost in its own soup, drowning out the combat music with a criminal use of slow motion and bad CGI effects. This style-over-object takes away from what could have been something interesting, or at least occasionally.

Even good performances from everyone in the cast can't help the film get past its biggest issues: sound, pacing, and the overarching story. The film fills every minute of its nearly two-hour running time with either action scenes or endless exposition. You'd think this means Knights is taking its time letting us sit with the characters and care about them, but there's so much story to set up that each character feels level-headed and well-rounded. Everything about the film thinks about its setting, they never feel important because we can't be invested in these characters any more than we can be invested in a character or a symbol. Archetypes can help with economic storytelling: But here they fall flat and keep the film from branching out into something worth investing in.
