Movies Review

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is back with "Jawan" (Hindi for "Soldier"), a thriller about a well-meaning terrorist and his team of kidnappers. and guns.

Khan's rise to fame began a year ago with a cameo in the otherwise meh mythofantastic superhero pic "Brahmastra Part One: Shiva." Then in, January, he stormed the box office with the lead role in "Pathaan," a spy thriller and the latest in the Yash Raj cinematic universe. "Jawan" is likely to delight Khan's fans, and perhaps unsuspecting viewers, if only because he's playing the role so well, now with a little more confidence and polish.

Produced by the "Jawan" star and his wife Gauri Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment Company, it's no surprise to see how carefully the film's plot and atmosphere are handled. This is Shah Rukh Khan's car, and so far, it has some expectations. Still, the makers of "Jawan" spend little effort to convince the viewers that we don't know the real character of the hero Khan, who, after being invented but still stirring up the series of events, took a train full of shields.

Khan's character, soon revealed that Azad, the warden of the women's prison, apparently killed a woman in a burqa, all wearing a black hat, which he soon ripped off. Khan, in turn, issues a desperate demand to the general negotiator Narmada (Nayanthara): make the Minister of Agriculture pay off the stolen loans of the starving farmers, or many people will die.

"Jawan" cares from one turn to the next, so fast that it almost doesn't matter how it used to be and in the end it tells its story and the things that are set up again and again. A few creative twists are also easy to anticipate. Azad falls in love with Narmada and is courting her ten-year-old daughter Suji (Seeza Saroj Mehta). He criticized various government officials and the fight against corruption and the few protests that were made in the media. Azad is speaking to the crowd but seems incoherent, doing a soft and nervous dance surrounded by motorists. He prided himself on his hard work and declared that he was actually a good man fighting against the real enemy: civil servants who did not serve the republic.

There is a plot twist that ties in the story of Narmada and Azad with the film's opening scene, which is set 30 years earlier in an unnamed village that may or may not be Tibet. (somewhere near the "border of India," which the Asian soldiers terrorized in the white star. studded green borders). If you've seen Shah Rukh Khan's movies before, you won't be surprised how these two shows came together, although you might be amused. It's a big plot twist that predictably takes the back half of the plot and reframes Azad's plot so that viewers know that this time, unlike other times, it's a secret.

This time, there is a sinister arms dealer, Kalee (Vijay Sethupahi), who is as evil as he is violent. Also, there is a surprise appearance from a Bollywood superstar, whose presence is not spoiled if you pay attention to the opening moments. And watch out for the duet dance number led by Khan and Deepika Padukone, who have a good chemistry, perhaps because they know that, for now, they don't have to really compete for the audience's love. Oh, and a couple of the fight scenes are the biggest show-stoppers despite being overdone and directed. Strong and powerful, sure, but not boring.

The main reason why "Jawan" doesn't deliver more than what Khan has delivered before is because its makers have included every masala arrangement they can think of. Still, "Jawan" is no different from the last two Khan comebacks as its creators are better at navigating the many hair-raising twists and turns. Kudos to director Atlee, a former assistant director whose credits include Rajinikanth's "Enthiran" and "2.0," created by his team.

More importantly, in "Jawan," Khan is more relaxed than in years past, swinging merrily through his singing tics and scenes. It's especially fun in the non-demanding musical numbers, and it still gives off a great Blue Steel look every time it plays a slow-mo heel to talk to the audience and/or the star. Shah Rukh Khan is still a star, a baby, and "Jawan" is using it as much as his fans can hope.

Khan is also good delivering an interesting but interesting speech later in the film. As Azad, Khan reminds us that he is just like you and me, unbiased people who, despite our best intentions, do not always make good decisions when it comes to choosing public officials. There are big elections in India next year, and while the makers of "Jawan" may have taken bigger risks, their efforts are appreciated.
