Movies Review
Milton (Ben Kingsley) lives a dull and quiet life in a small town in rural Pennsylvania. He goes about his usual routine of watching the same TV shows every night, tending to his garden, attending council meetings and constantly calling his daughter Denise (Zoe Winters). One night a UFO crashes into his garden and no one believes him when he tells them. A few days later, an alien appears, whom he begins to care for and names them Jules (Jade Quon). Jules does not speak and communicates only by drawing pictures of cats. Two senior citizens Sandy (Harriet Harris) and Joyce (Jane Curtin) snoop around and discover the Milton containing Jules, and they all work together to help the alien fix his ship.
It was interesting to see the non-verbal communication work so well since Jules doesn't speak or feel during the film. Halfway through you start thinking that this alien is just a robot that doesn't care about these weird elderly people. But through kindness, they develop a relationship with Jules, who later protects them in dangerous situations.
I haven't seen the trailer for this movie; I only read the brief synopsis and decided to take a chance. I was glad I did. This cute movie was comedic, but it dealt with real issues like watching parents age, separation from family, and death. I usually don't like movies about family, but this one was more relatable than most. I found this movie warm and like a hug for the environment. My grandmother lives in a small village, just like in the movie. The depiction of small town USA was perfect, even down to the repeated requests to the village council for road signs/signals at certain intersections. The authenticity to me was what made me love it so much.
You'd expect some of the film's events to be a little more emotionally heavy, but honestly, it's not that deep. It's not bad for me; sometimes I don't need to be provoked to think deeply; I want to entertain. I think it was helpful for me to go into the film with no expectations, which is why I enjoyed it so much. This is a good choice if you want a movie that challenges your brain and is still entertaining. I have to warn you though - if you have a hard time with dead and dying cats, you may have trouble with parts of the film.
