GO WEST is a western style comedy told in the tone of MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. GO WEST follows the hilarious misadventures of a cursed widow and her friends as they cross the country of the Old West to save her teenage daughter from marrying an outlaw. It has some strong, pro-family moral content, but the positive content is mixed with a lot of unfunny scatological humor and other lame comedy, along with some pagan, occult funny moments. The film opens with the narrator, Sean Astin, portraying a cursed widow named Aveline Jenkins. Her curse made every man she loved meet a tragic end. After her husband's death, Aveline sent her children with her parents to Oregon. Aveline lives in Missouri to take care of her sick sister, Cora.
Aveline went to the general store to buy salted pork and picked up a letter from her daughter. There, Aveline meets Elijah Goodman, a teacher traveling west, a miser with serious father issues, the shopkeeper, Robert Failure Gladstone. Despite being cursed, Aveline and Elijah instantly felt an attraction to each other. Through the letter, Aveline learns that her daughter will marry a criminal she met along the way to Oregon. Aveline then decides to go west to save her daughter. In her haste to save her daughter, Aveline accidentally cuts Robert's wages by half a penny for salt pork. Robert vows to get the remaining halfpenny from Aveline.
Aveline prepares to head west and joins a group of travelers consisting of her sister Cora, Elijah and many people from her hometown. Can this motley crew pull together to survive the perilous journey to Oregon?
The visuals and sounds in GO WEST are professionally done and the music is fun. The set pieces are not period accurate for the 1800s, but they are not always immediately apparent. Unfortunately, the humor often seems forced, unintentionally awkward and even lame. Lastly, the story and dialogue are definitely weird, even considering this is a comedy.
GO WEST has some strong moral and pro-family content. For example, it has brief references to the Bible, faith and belief in God. In addition, the main female character cares about her teenage daughter and takes care of her sick younger brother. it has brief references to the Bible, faith and belief in God. However, this positive content is marred by a lot of unfunny and bland scatological humor and some pagan, superstitious, supernatural content. For example, the heroine uses her curse to save herself from a rampaging bison by telling the bison she loves her. Furthermore, he spoke to two dead men from Heaven who appeared in the sky. One of the men sold his soul to the Devil, but had his fingers crossed at the time, so the deal didn't count. Also, the epilogue at the end implies that the dead man had a homosexual relationship with Davey Crocket in Heaven, even though in real life Davey was a brilliant and noble man of God. So, overall, MOVIEGUIDE® finds GO WEST overkill.
Moviegoers should note that the film was created by a comedy troupe that aired a comedy skit show on the Cable-TV network operated by Brigham Young University, which was founded by the Mormon Church. Also, the story begins in Independence, Missouri, where the Mormon Church's trinitarian splinter group is based.
