Samuthirkani has donned the director's cap for BRO, a remake of his Tamil film Vinodaya Sitham. When it comes to the film's central theme, its heart is in the right place. However, the execution is strained, with many references to Pawan Kalyan's political ideology and hit songs, not enough time is spent on the emotional core of it all.
Markandey aka Mark (Sai Tej) is the head of his family despite his young age. Everything he says goes, and his siblings see him more as a father than a brother when he scolds them. His life seems to be going well in every way when his life changes completely. He meets with an accident, but Titan (Pawan Kalyan) gives him a second chance to use what he always lacked - time. With 90 days in hand, Mark decided to take care of his family before he died. But did his family really need him?
BRO's story sounds heartwarming and life-affirming on paper. Whatever little you do; How do you make sure it lasts while making sure no one else gets hurt? However, in an attempt to commercialize these highly poignant issues, the film Samuthirkani chooses duets, special numbers, sudden references to Pawan Kalyan's career and more which don't always work or worse - water down the emotions.
With a central theme of the film and a lot of potential, BRO is relying on the audience rush only for Pawan Kalyan and Sai Tej. Their chemistry is comfortable, maybe a little too comfortable for what the story wants for them. The first half of the film keeps us hooked most of the time. When Pawan shows his easygoing nature to Amy Sodara or Vayri Bhama with a glass of tea in his hand, it makes you smile. As the second half moves to La La Bhimla in slow motion, you want more.
Sai Tej on the other hand is confused when it comes to emotions. He seems more comfortable in comedy or action sequences. Rohini plays his mother, Priya Warrier plays his sister and Ketika Sharma plays her lover. While the women in this film are refreshingly assertive at times, they also cry on screen. There is a cameo by Brahmanandam who wishes it was woven in better.Thaman's songs are spot on, but he excels when it comes to the background score in some key parts of the film. Sujith Vasudev's cinematography is very good. The film was shortened by the VFX and costume department.
BRO could be a poignant story of a man who wanted to grow up a little too fast and, in the process, forgot to make the most of his life. What you get instead is a film that loses steam as it progresses with a message lost in the confusion of it all. This is a missed opportunity.
