Movies Review

It's a simple task for a storyteller to attempt a detective thriller that stays true to the genre where the plot, not the stars, drive the film. However, entertainment guru Surender Reddy has decided to give the genre the appeal of a star vehicle and widen its appeal to the masses with his latest outing, Agent. Trying to juggle both worlds produces different results but you still get an entertaining and unsettling action movie that will keep you hooked.

The makers were not lying when they said that the story revolves around three agents - Mahadev, Ramakrishna and Dharma (nicknamed Devil, Wild and God). While Mahadev heads RAW and Dharma is a spy-turned-spies, Ramakrishna's work as an agent is hardly left out. While understanding the hullabaloo around the mission, targets, weapons and strategy may alienate the audience, the director makes up for it with the entertaining story of Ramakrishna.

Surender Reddy has shown that he cares more about quality and entertainment than logic or belief. Ramakrishna guarded his interest as a spy and kept it a secret from his parents and girlfriend as well. He uses strange tactics to get his dream job. The film, in the first part, borders on absurdity as it tries to justify its enthusiasm.

The romance section is an important link between Ramakrishna and his ambitions even though the writing is bad - the girl has a surplus but becomes a beautiful thing and later a girl in trouble. To the credit of the team, the packed and busy video doesn't give you time to think. Meanwhile, his boss Mahadev has received a valiant recognition in the film world and Mammootty, with his experience (or shall we say swag?), plays it with a touch of class.
Look beyond the shaky foundation, Agent impresses you with its efforts to add its three main characters with decent arcs and give them all to shine. Although the antagonist initially appears like a cartoonish 70's Hindi movie villain, the audience will quickly understand his side of the story. Surender Reddy is at his best when setting up big moments and executing action sequences - it's a paisa vasool experience on the big screen.

The Agent receives the order that must be done before the break. The momentum of the film picks up in the second hour. The protagonist is on the edge of the world, loyalties are constantly shifting and there is a fair amount of action, twists and turns supported by well-written subplots. Barring romantic CG/VFX work at locations, bad song placement and not-so-cool Hiphop Tamizha tracks, the fabric of the film is quite appealing.

The final confrontation of the actors in the climax could have been smarter but it gives Mammootty the license to talk about the sacrifices of the undercover agents for a better world. If you look at the image and the aura of the star, the strategy pays off. Going by the way Surender Reddy handles this medium, Agent proves that he has kept up with the times and has done a great job of capturing the dynamics of the crowd.

For a detective thriller, Agent is quite long - about 156 minutes - and the conflict tests your patience a bit until the end. With the character of Akhil Akkineni, the makers put him as a Jackie Chan lookalike with his body language and his role got many nicknames - monkey, wild saala are popular. Akhil's uninhibited performance helps you overlook his boyish appeal and buy into the character's eccentricities.

Mammootty plays a role that complements his experience well, his stardom and restraint act as a balancing act amidst Akhil's adventure. Dino Morea grows on you over time and there is a sincere effort on his part to give the role a distinct personality even if the dubbing problem is seen as a distraction. Sakshi Vaidya sounds like a dream but her Telangana accent is buzzing. You wish the makers had done a better job of including his role in the story.

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar is lost in a nonsensical special form while Sampath Raj, Murali Sharma, Posani Krishna Murali do what is expected of them. Rasool Ellore's value as a supervisor is reflected in the results. The editors could have done a job of smoothing out the inconsistencies in the narrative. In the end, the Agent lets you have fun and get tired of the part. The protagonist is on the edge of the world, loyalties are constantly shifting and there is a fair amount of action, twists and turns supported by well-written subplots.
