Movies Review

Jayveer Panghal’s one-room thriller Roash stars Nikita Soni, Alina Roy, Mimoh Chakraborty, and Yash Raj (YR). There is a unique requirement for a room that every filmmaker must understand. Hollywood did it in the 40s and 50s with classics like Rope and 12 Angry Men. Of course, these movies were too big to be comparable, but then there was hope that someone would match half of them, which would equate to what we call a good movie. The idea is simple: you create all your main characters under one roof, let one character stand out, and get him or her involved with the other characters in surprising ways. Rosh does it somehow, and that’s enough to keep you hooked for two hours.

The story of Rosh is a story of a conflict where it becomes difficult to distinguish between hero and villain, between good and evil. While returning from a party, Ronika (Nikita Soni), Alina (Alina Rai), and Rajat (Mimoh Chakraborty) get into an accident and run away. A delivery boy, Ganesh (Yash Raj), knocks on their door to deliver cakes and somehow manages to enter the house. His brief visit becomes a longer one as he reveals some surprising secrets to Ronika, Alina, and Rajat. As events unfold, the story becomes a mystery, and the line between right and wrong becomes blurred for both protagonist and antagonist. Who is right, who is wrong, and who will win the battle in the end?

Rosh is a decent script, but very repetitive. We’ve seen all these tantrums and twists in many films, but Rosh has the human connect right. It’s a subject that’s probably strictly coded with middle and lower class people, as well as the deluded. That band fraud and OTP stuff is so well known that you can't bear to see it once again in this film, but I don't know how Rosh manages make it good and interesting even when the pressure is high. That’s one of the main virtues of the film, while the rest of the narrative doesn’t really offer anything new. As a whole, it is a familiar storyline, yet watchable for some unknown reason.

Speaking of performances, Yash Raj is the real star here. He comes into the picture late but still overshadows everyone else in the film. First he’s that naive-looking guy, then he’s a common middle-class guy, and then he goes violent like a typical hero, but in a good sense. YR really put life into this movie with his performance. The ladies here are sexually attractive and damn beautiful. Nikita Soni and Alina Rai look sexy and hot, as their roles demand, but the acting is below par. Mimoh Chakraborty has some scenes that work in her favour, but other times she is not that good either. It was great to see Vrajesh Hirjee in a funny role after a while, but why didn’t he get enough screen space? This project could have been carried out until it reached its full potential. Unfortunately, it’s been held to a subpar level. The supporting cast of Govind Panday, Allu Ashish Soni, Jill Kilroy, and Ruchi Tiwari is somewhat impressive.

Rosh has a song in the beginning that will bore you with its bad lyrics and music. The visuals for the same are sexy, though. However, there are no other songs later on, and so the film holds its grip well. Like I said, the core of his story will strike chords with middle class people, as the film really stands out as a revenge thriller. Less thrill, I would say, but the revenge is fitting and meaningful. The screenplay slows down a bit in the middle and at the conclusion. Jayveer Panghaal‘s direction is passable. It could have done much better with well-functioning theories and intelligent storytelling. Though he stays, he channels outdated theories and ideas that won’t please clever audiences. Nevertheless, Rosh will connect with the masses instead, who have been robbed and deceived. This movie will satisfy his unspoken anger and rage, for sure.
