Movies Review
Those who do not learn from history, must repeat it, goes another proverb. Nitesh Tiwari weaves a cautionary tale about the dangers of fascism, going back to the Second World War era and revisiting the horrors of Nazism and Auschwitz to bring home the point that we should learn from the mistakes of the past, lest they consume us again. It is also a moral story suggesting relationships. Credit Nitesh Tiwari for doing something different. Not many people would have conceived to make a romantic film about the Holocaust and the War but he went ahead and made it.
Ajay (Varun Dhawan) is a history teacher who is more concerned about preserving the 'image'. He wants the world to know that he is leading a perfect life with his perfect wife but the truth is far from this facade. He is married to Nisha (Janhvi Kapoor), who comes from a rich family, he thinks he has a wife but he avoids any relationship with her because she suffers from epilepsy. He is a history teacher in a famous school in Lucknow but instead of doing his job properly, he likes to be lazy in the class and let the students do their thing. Ironically, they love him so much as they also find time during his studies. While he has everyone happy, Nisha is the one person who sees through him and is thinking of leaving him. One day he arrived at school upset and in his anger he ended up slapping a student. He did not know that the said student is a member of parliament related to the school.
The politician wants strict disciplinary measures to be taken against him as a result of which Ajay was suspended. In order to regain the trust of his principal, and the returning students, he plans to go to Europe and teach students about World War II by teaching them from the real places. He convinces his parents to finance the tour and takes Nisha with him. The forced vacation proves to be a blessing for the couple, as they visit WWII sites and learn about their history, they begin to discover each other and slowly fall in love. Ajay is seen transforming into a good husband, a good man and a teacher as he embraces the true horrors of the Nazis and learns how his life was a mess compared to what people in Europe went through at the time. Nisha, who always clings to the hope that there is a better version of Ajay hiding somewhere, gets her wish fulfilled.
Director Nitesh Tiwari has been careful to get the facts right in the film. He shot the film in real places and made sure that the viewers get an experience through the drama of the Normandy landings, where thousands of Allied soldiers were killed and the experience of Auschwitz. A scary place is visited in Poland, and Ajay and Nisha have the idea of relaxing there. Anne Frank's house in Amsterdam was also visited. These places are sanctuaries for suffering human beings and the director treats them with the respect and dignity they deserve.
Varun Dhawan has appeared in his smallest film yet. In fact he plays a character who is on the surface and has no worries about it, until he learns to dive deep and accept the reality of life ahead. The film revolves around his role and he gives it his all. Janhvi Kapoor emerges as a heroine directors can rely on and plays Nisha with just the right amount of grace and vulnerability to make you root for her. The two players play against each other and take advantage of their opportunities.
We all know that War is bad, Hitler is a liar, and every relationship goes through Auschwitz - the three biggest lessons from the movie. But what is the harm of repeating these true truths in an age where living in denial is the norm.Nisha, who always clings to the hope that there is a better version of Ajay hiding somewhere, gets her wish fulfilled.Director Nitesh Tiwari has been careful to get the facts right in the film.
