Movies Review
The Russian fairy tale about a scorpion that stung a frog on whose back it was mounting seems to be popular in Bollywood circles. The scorpion's inability to abandon its fundamentally destructive nature at the expense of its own safety was a key motif in Jasmeet K. Reen's Darlings (2022). The deadly dance of arachnids and amphibians similarly inspires the characters and events in Aasmaan Bhardwaj's directorial debut Kuttey.
There are other references to ancient wisdom in the film, which wants to prove that this isn't your average dog-eat-dog jargon. But Kuttey's origins lie elsewhere, in the mid-career films of Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese, through the director's father, Vishal Bhardwaj, and his crime thriller Kaminey (2009).
Apart from remaking his worm Kaminey Dhan Te Nan for Kuttey, Vishal Bhardwaj has composed some lovely tunes for the new film, including the cheeky title track which combines the lyrics of Faiz Ahmed Faiz with the chorus of 'Bhow Bhow'. Bhardwaj Sr. also contributed to the script of Bhardwaj Jr. – a messy pile of gunplay and assorted characters all framed together. Most of the heroes are cousins of the Kaminey nihilists. These include a pair of corrupt cops trying to cheat their crime boss, another cop with dirty hands, a young couple and a group of Naxalites led by Lakshmi (Konkona Sensharma).
Gopal (Arjun Kapoor) and his partner Paaji (Kumud Mishra) desperately and quickly need a lot of money. Poonam (Tabu) is their influential friend with extracurricular activities. Pretty (Radhika Madan) and Danish (Shardul Bharadwaj) are also chasing the pot of gold.
Paaji had an early falling out with Lakshmi in 2003 - an event that should have made Kuttey a political allegory of sorts, but ended up being a pretext for another massacre.Weapons are as readily available as the stereotypes in this film's fictional geography. Bombay is imagined as a desolate place where corpses pile up like garbage cans and no one is the wiser. The Maoists, at one point depicted in a scarlet silhouette resembling characters from an anime film, even managed to penetrate from the depths of Maharashtra towards the sea. It's not just blood and overflowing guts. You should have fun watching caring actors strutting like Navy Seals and swearing like sailors. Almost every actor is given a gun and asked to fire, which he bravely does.
Vishal Bhardwaj has a background score that comically sounds like an ogre at the bottom of the ocean clearing its throat. There are jokes too, from an iconic Hindi filmmaker being brutalized to a film actor complaining that his lights went out.Could there be anything more to Kuttey than the very familiar parade of crime-induced venality? Could the merciless slaughter be a commentary on the state of the nation - it's a dog's life with no hope of any treats at the store? This thought disappears like many characters, some of which appear and disappear randomly. The future of the republic is indeed at stake if people are dumb enough to attack the man who holds the key to their fortune. At least Aasmaan Bhardwaj does well with his large cast, which includes great actors who try to look serious while wielding assault rifles. Among them, only Arjun Kapoor seems most comfortable channeling his inner Rambo.
Konkona Sensharma's fiery Lakshmi has a great scene with a killer line about the state's relationship with its subjects. Seasoned scene-stealer Tabu as Poonam has a bullet for a locket, a few nonsensical jokes and some of the most cynical moments of the film. The Maoists, at one point depicted in a scarlet silhouette resembling characters from an anime film, even managed to penetrate from the depths of Maharashtra towards the sea.
