Movies Review

Almost immediately after they met as children, Audrey and Lulu became inseparable. They were among the few Asian Americans in a painfully homogenous white town in the Pacific Northwest. When their first player throws a racist slur at them, Lolo punches him right in the face as Audrey watches in horror. From that fateful day, the couple stuck together through the rest of school, the beginning of their careers, and the beginning of bad choices. Now as a senior partner at a law firm, Audrey (Ashley Park) has the chance for a life-changing breakthrough when her boss sends her to China to close a major business deal, with Lolo (Sherry Cola), Audrey's counterpart. more complicated. , came along on an adventure as a translator back to their country. With the help of two friends, Deadeye (Sabrina Wu) and Kat (Stephanie Hsu), the group embarks on an unforgettable journey that is deep and dirty about what identity means and how to be true to yourself.

Still, as the tone may shake from Audrey's search for her long-lost mother, who gave her up for adoption, and the team that meets the members of the traveling basketball team, there is no shortage of jokes and other funny situations for keep it. pitiful laughter and total physical collapse roll together. To increase the storm of the film, Paul Yee's film transports the audience from the banality of Audrey and Lolo's town to a series of exciting dance performances of the group's K-Pop number and many stops along the way, from the fog of down the great rivers to busy cafes and bright clubs. The richness of each scene offsets the sense of whiplash from the breakneck pace of the story.

When she first appeared in public, Adele Lim took a bold adventure in the comedy "Joy Ride." The film walks a fine line between exploring heart-wrenching questions about existence and a wicked joke played for shock value. It's as if Lim and his partners Cherry Chevapravatdumrong and Teresa Hsiao saw the adventures in Malcolm D. Lee's "The Walking Dead" as a challenge to the top. It's safe to say that the crew in "Joy Ride" made a big surprise, but whether it's effective or not will depend on the viewer's stomach to enjoy it.

Beyond the humor, "Joy Ride" also pokes fun at Audrey's identity crisis, using it as a platform for self-expression and cultural commentary. One of the most famous sequences of the movie takes place when Audrey is seduced by a white American, the drug dealer wants to hide her belongings. At first, she accepted her American friends with the money to live with the other Chinese passengers, and put the group in a serious situation, because as Lolo said, Audrey shows hatred for people who look like her. There are many moments in the film, such as when they land at the Shanghai airport; Audrey noticed a feeling he felt for her to no longer be in the minority. There are even more jokes I notice about missing out on the country's traditional food or speaking the language when you grow up without the culture. These parallels and observations in "Joy Ride" provide a more pleasant feeling about random sexual activities and unadvised tattoos.

As with many movies, the strength lies in its cast, and "Joy Ride" is no exception. The central drama between Ashley Park and Sherry Cola's characters, their relationship changes and evolves along the way, forcing them to consider the moment of self-discovery. Park plays a straight-laced character, an overachiever destined for greatness—with all the flaws that can come with that character. With a deceptive calmness, the character of Cola often causes most of the problems of the film but not in a malicious way, almost as if he is always optimistic that she will get the result she wants. Sabrina Wu's Deadeye and Stephanie Hsu's Kat bring change to the mix, as Deadeye's unpredictability and moodiness make it difficult for others to relate to her, and Kat's past comes to haunt her more than once, even though she is trying to change it. lifestyle for a Christian young man.

While not everything in "Joy Ride" comes together well, Lim's film is very interesting. It is mostly light-hearted but occasionally deep in what it says about identity and friendship. The show's stars embrace the high-stakes horror jinks, enjoying a free pass to act bad and push the envelope of raunch comedy. For all its twists and turns, "Joy Ride" remains unapologetically true to itself and to the central friendship that starts us all on our journeys.
