Movies Review

This Ukrainian play features a bricolage of tropes from many children's stories; Most of these are based on other films but there are strong historical narratives in there as well. The forest warrior sprite Mavka (voiced by Laurie Hymes in English) is a magical creature with green hair, big doe eyes and magical healing skills, who lives in a part of the forest where people don't go, thanks to the ancient agreement between them and the spirits of the forest. But rich Kalina wants to find an elixir from a magic tree in the forest that prevents her from aging, so she sends a young musician named Lucas into the forest to find it - and soon he makes friends / he love him. Mavka.

Very much based on Lesya Ukrainka's 1911 play The Forest Song, all this is very much in the tradition of Rapunzel through Disney's Tangled, with a big dash of Ferngully: The Last Rainforest, while the side animals - such as the cat-frog Swampy . and a mobile/talking tree spirit named Frol - are similar to the abominations created from the Island of Doctor Moreau.

Squint so much, you can hardly make an example there about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with Kalina representing the Russian aggressors who just want to take the forest for its resources. The inhabitants of the region, unlike in such films, are very much considered as being from a particular country, what with the traditional Ukrainian red and white clothes and the tendency to get into the throat when the mood takes them. Squint so much, you can hardly make an example there about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with Kalina representing the Russian aggressors who just want to take the forest for its resources. In the end, Mavka had to be able to tap into her anger—a physical flash, literally—and that anger she ignited gave her the strength to balance her attackers' power. OK, so the spark isn't shaped like a cluster bomb or an M1 Abrams battle tank, but the balance between Mavka and the Zelenskiy government, finding internal resistance with help from outside agents, is on the table, waiting to be parsed.

The color palette is eye-catching and viewers over the age of eight can pick up this simple weapon in their heads. However, the character animations and movements are thoughtful and well done. Most importantly, the music is great, especially Ukrainian songs - because who doesn't like a little throat singing?
