Movies Review

Rajinikanth is back for real and how! Whenever Thalaivar scores a hit, it almost feels personal. After 'Annatthe' which received a negative response, it has been a long time since Rajinikanth delivered a solid entertainer. And for Nelson Dilipkumar, who is returning from Thalapathy Vijay's 'Beast', getting the 'Jailor' rights was a must. And he did a great job!

'Jailor' opens with a group of people involved in idol smuggling, with Verma (Vinayakan) as the ringleader. Arjun (Vasant Ravi) is an honest police officer who wants to trace and bust an idol smuggling network. However, Arjun is kidnapped by Varma and everyone in the police department fears that he is dead. His father, Muthuvel Pandian (Rajinikanth), a former police officer, is distraught.

Muthuvel Pandian is a loving father and now he wants revenge. He goes on a killing spree, which leads him to Verma. But that is not the end. Verma also gives Muthuvel a tough task. And Muthuvel accepts it on one condition. The why, what and how are explored in about three hours. He helps his grandson through his YouTube channel, buys vegetables for the house and has a whole lot of fun. It's great to see Thalaivar doing mundane things as opposed to the stylish acts we usually see. But Nelson strikes a balance by tapping both sides of Rajinikanth, which is why 'Jailor' works.Verma also gives Muthuvel a tough task. And Muthuvel accepts it on one condition. Director Nelson Dilipkumar is known for his impeccable comedic timing and has incorporated dark comedy in all his films. 'Jailor' is no different. In fact, Rajinikanth gets a subdued introduction as a retired man who takes care of household chores. He helps his grandson through his YouTube channel, buys vegetables for the house and has a whole lot of fun. It's great to see Thalaivar doing mundane things as opposed to the stylish acts we usually see. But Nelson strikes a balance by tapping both sides of Rajinikanth, which is why 'Jailor' works.

Rajinikanth does all the heavy lifting in 'Jailor'. The story of 'Jailor' has shades of Kamal Haasan's 'Vikram'. These two films are about a father who will go to great lengths for his children, even if it means fighting a criminal gang. While 'Vikram' sticks fairly to its genre, 'Jailor' is a professional actioner, with the right dose of action. In the early episodes of Jailor, Rajinikanth tries to do black comedy. While the comedy works in parts, it falls flat in many places. The film takes its sweet time getting into the main conflict. But whenever the film lags, Rajinikanth makes up for it with his powerful performance.

'Jailor' is a film that celebrates the core of the film industry. We have Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff and Mohanlal setting the screen on fire with their explosive cameos. And seeing these greats sharing screen space with Rajinikanth has many whistle-worthy moments. The film has many callback moments from Rajinikanth's superhit films like 'Baasha' and 'Enthiran', with a nice touch of nostalgia.

The interval sequence, which showcases Rajinikanth's epic transformation, is a total blast! This is one of those sequences that brings out the best in everyone. And when Anirudh's 'Hukum' play is done, you are sold!

Jailer also has its own shortcomings. Although the story is very predictable, there are places where you start questioning how people across the country can help Rajinikanth. A flashback to his early days as a police officer is unconvincing. Many murders take place, but there are no consequences. The story begins in Arkonam and travels to Kavli, Bangalore and many other cities in India. And sometimes we find the 'jailer' irrelevant. A flashback to his early days as a police officer is unconvincing. Many murders take place, but there are no consequences. 'Jailor' marks Rajinikanth's return to form. Even at 72, his charisma and style make you scream in the theater. After Rajinikanth, Vinayak has completely stolen the show. His penetrating gaze and deadly misdeeds make him the perfect villain for Rajinikanth. Vasant Ravi also has a role in the film. Even at 72, his charisma and style make you scream in the theater. Rajinikanth's performance is an asset to 'Jailor', while Anirudh Ravichander acts as the backbone of the film. Its stunning background score will make you enjoy Rajinikanth's swag. Whenever the song 'Hukum' plays on the screen, the theater erupts with joy. Its stunning background score will make you enjoy Rajinikanth's swag. Cinematographer Vijay Karthik Kannan's frames are grand and offer a visual extravaganza. R Nirmal's editing also complements the mood of the film. Ramya Krishnan, Sunil, Tamannaah, Yogi Babu and many others appear in short-lived roles.

'Jailor' is a film that celebrates Rajinikanth for what he is. 'Jailor' has the sparks of Nelson's wit that make it so enjoyable.
